ジャンルの枠を越えたクワイエット・ミュージック専門番組「Ambience」が放送されていた80年代末のオーストラリア。その編集盤にも収められたMichael Atherton（マイケル・アザートン）が率いるグループSouthern Crossings（サザン・クロッシングス）と並び、フォークミュージック・レーベルSandstock Musicの作品の中でも群を抜いて実験的な音響志向を示していたのが、このColin Offord（コリン・オフォード）。音楽家でありビジュアル・アーティスト、書家でもあるオフォードは、オリジナル楽器や音響彫刻の製作、世界各国でのコンサート、環境インスタレーション、ワークショップ、異種間コラボレーションなど、現在まで約40年にわたり八面六臂な活動を展開しており、その多能ぶりから「ワールド・ミュージック界のレオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチ」とも呼ばれています。創作楽器のビルダー兼パフォーマーとして彼が最も力を注いできたのが、不規則な形の木製胴体に9本の弦を張り、マウスピースやゴングを取り付けた「グレート・アイランド・マウスボウ」。オフォードはこの楽器を弓で弾いたり木の棒で叩いたり、またマウスピースを使って音色を変えたり息を吹き込んだりしながら、自身の歌唱を交えて演奏します。この他にも、大きな植物の葉や枝に一本の弦を張り共鳴体を付けた「オーストラリアン・ボウ」、木の枠に月の形の鐘を吊り下げた「ムーンベル」、地面に立てた複数の木の枝に長い弦を張った環境インスタレーション「アースハープ」など、ユニークな楽器が多数。本作「インディジェナス・スピーシーズ＝先住民族」は彼のおそらく3枚目となるアルバム。ジャケットの写真にも映る初期型グレート・アイランド・マウスボウをはじめ、フィリピン・ミンダナオ島の口琴、タイ・イサーンのケーン、レインドラム（ミャンマーやタイで使われた雨乞いのための青銅製打楽器）、ウィンドパイプ、法螺貝などの楽器を巧みに操り、未知なる生命感に溢れたディープな超民族的音楽宇宙を繰り広げています。

A synthesis of music, visual art and performance that embraces western experimentalism, folk music, improvisation, East Asian, Aboriginal and Pacific cultural influences. His activities include concerts, environmental performances, the making of original instruments and sound sculpture, cross cultural collaborations, scores for theatre, film, dance, new media, animation and circus, exhibitions and installations, corporate and special events, community projects and workshops.
