現代エキゾ/ラウンジの怪作。作者はニューヨークを拠点に活動する音楽家ショーン・マリンズを中心とするプロジェクトMoon Mullins（ムーン・マリンズ）。マリンズ自身がヴィンテージ・シンセやリズムボックスなど多くのパートを担当するほか、チェロ奏者のカール・マコマス＝ライヒル、マルチ奏者のアダム・ブリズビンといったゲスト奏者が参加しています。イージーリスニングやムード音楽の意匠をベッドルーム・ポップ感覚で再解釈する手法は前回紹介したThe Sweet Enoughsと共通していますが、本作の感触はよりダブ的で密室。眩暈を誘うようなヨレヨレの脱臼感とストレンジな音像。陽気なメロディが彩る心地よいトロピカル・ムードの背後に、ふと薄気味悪さが顔を覗かせるシュールな世界観。実体のない会員制ラウンジの隅で人知れず回り続けるレコードプレーヤーのよう。現行のエキゾ/ラウンジ界隈のなかでも、とりわけヴェイパーウェイヴの亡霊的な影を感じさせるイマジナリーな作品です。アートワークも秀逸。
A modern exotica/lounge curio. Moon Mullins is a project centered around New York-based musician Sean Mullins. Mullins himself handles various parts, including vintage synths and rhythm boxes, joined by guest musicians such as cellist Karl McComas-Reichl and multi-instrumentalist Adam Brisbin. While sharing the approach of reinterpreting easy listening and mood music aesthetics with a bedroom pop sensibility—as seen in the previously featured The Sweet Enoughs—this work feels more dub-infused and claustrophobic. It presents a dizzying, wonky, off-kilter instability and strange sonic textures. A surreal worldview where a faint unease peeks through behind the pleasant tropical mood painted by cheerful melodies. Like a record player spinning unnoticed in the corner of an intangible members-only lounge. Within the current exotica/lounge scene, this is an especially imaginary work that evokes the ghostly shadow of vaporwave. The artwork is also outstanding.
