Peter Arnesen has been active since the 1970s as a keyboardist for various bands, including touring support for Ian Hunter and David Bowie, as well as progressive rock groups. After a career at the forefront of rock, Arnesen returned from the UK to his native Austria and embraced a broader, genre-defying approach to composition. This solo album, featuring his own multi-tracked recordings, was released on a local New Age label. The inspiration for this work comes from Poet Laureate Alfred Austin’s travelogue Haunts of Ancient Peace (1902) and its accompanying watercolors by Agnes Locke, along with his own personal life experiences. Scenes such as the flora of old-fashioned gardens, historic buildings that have served their purpose, riverside nature, and rural landscapes are expressed through crystal-clear digital synthesizers, piano, and various percussion. It is an album that evokes a gentle, tender perspective—like reminiscing over distant memories, leafing through an old stamp album, or tending to a miniature garden.

仙台を拠点とするデュオ・プロジェクトSubtle（サトル）が、青山スパイラルのレーベルから発表した初のフルアルバム。メンバーは作曲家/マルチ奏者の瀬川雄太と、プログラミング/編集担当の中谷俊介。

瀬川氏による生楽器や鍵盤、プログラミングを主体とする抑制の効いたバンドアンサンブルをもとに、中谷氏がポストプロダクション的なエディットを加えて再構築したインストゥルメンタル・サウンド。当時の音響派の過度な構築性と比べると、本作の感性はよりおおらかで、メロディや情緒性、流動的な展開に比重が置かれています。ブラジル/イベリア系の浮遊感のあるギターのコードワークを基調としながら、端正なアンサンブル構造をあえて崩したり、意外性のある単発的なモチーフやノイズが予期せぬ場所に配置されたり。そうしたアイデアの断片がドライなプロダクションの中で漂泊的に現れては消えていきます。Gastr del SolやTortoiseといった当時のシカゴ勢への敬意を滲ませつつ、その影響を意図的に避けて独自の語法を模索するような試行錯誤が端々でうかがえ、結果として、どの方向にも振り切れていない絶妙なバランスが本作のオリジナリティになっているようにも感じます。エレクトロニックでありながら緻密なところはアナログという、冷たさと暖かさが同居する有機的な手触りは、ひょっとして音響派の文脈よりもInterior(s)のような中間音楽のリスニング感に近いのかもしれません。あらためて良いアルバムだなと思います。

This is the debut full-length album by the Sendai-based project Subtle, released on Spiral Records' imprint. The duo consists of composer/multi-instrumentalist Yuta Segawa and programmer/editor Shunsuke Nakatani.

The instrumental sound is rooted in a restrained band ensemble—primarily Segawa's live instrumentation and programming—which Nakatani then reconstructs through post-production editing. Compared to the highly structural nature often found in the experimental/post-rock scenes of that era, this work leans more toward melody, emotional resonance, and fluid progression. The string work is grounded in Brazilian and Iberian-influenced chords, carrying a distinct sense of buoyancy. These fragments of ideas—the deliberate disruption of neat ensemble structures or the addition of sudden, stray motifs and noise—drift and dissolve within a dry production.

While hinting at a deep respect for the Chicago scene of the time (Gastr del Sol, Tortoise), one can sense a deliberate effort to bypass those influences in search of a personal vocabulary. This process of trial and error results in a peculiar, unclassifiable balance that defines the album's originality. Its organic texture—electronic yet meticulously analog, where coldness and warmth coexist—feels perhaps closer listening experience of Interior(s) and the "Medium Music" aesthetic than to the context of the post-rock movement. It remains a truly great album.

「楽器の魔術師」と称されるオスロ出身の作曲家/フルート奏者Svein Hansen（スヴェイン・ハンセン）を中心に、ノルウェーにおけるラテン音楽の探究者らによって結成されたプロジェクトFra Ola Narr（フラ・オラ・ナール）のデビューアルバム。

祝祭の場で踊られるスクエア・ダンス「フィーレトゥル」。山間部の牛呼び歌「クロック」。イギリスから伝来した三拍子舞曲「エングリス」。スルナダール地方の素朴な子守唄「ボーンスッル」。軽快で弾むようなポルカの亜種「ポルケット」。───ノルウェー各地に根付く土着の伝統形式に、ハンセンが長年培ってきた中南米のリズムを高度に結びつけた新感覚のフォーク・フュージョン。北欧とラテンという対極的な異文化混交を試みた野心的作品でありながら、音楽的な難解さは感じられず。随所に散りばめられた知的なユーモアと、空き瓶や椅子の背もたれまでも取り入れた遊び心あふれるアンサンブルが、耳新しくも懐かしい空想民族的な味わいを生み出しています。

プロジェクト名の「フラ・オラ・ナール」とは、オスロに実在する丘の名前に由来。19世紀に農村から大都市クリスチャニア（現オスロ）へ移住し、外務省の給仕などを務めながら、その派手な服装や振る舞いから「道化師オラ（オラ・ナール）」の愛称で親しまれたOle Arnesen（オーレ・アーネセン）なる伝説的人物の逸話に因むものだそうです。以下は、ブックレットに寄せられた作家Arild Nyquist（アリール・ニクヴィスト）による解説の抜粋です。

It is one of four releases in a series that categorizes tanning levels into four stages—Light, Dark, Professional, and Ultra—with music tailored to each. This specific volume was produced for those enjoying a "Light Tan."

The music is composed by Takashi Shima, keyboardist for the city pop group PIPER (famous for their iconic album art featuring surfers in cropped T-shirts). Much like ATLAS’s BREEZE, the album features a seamless flow where Japanese fusion and New Age tracks are linked by the ambient sounds of crashing waves. かつてのノイズ/インダストリアル路線から、より美しく永劫なるものへと志向を変え、チルアウトやサイケデリックの潮流を取り込みながら、デジタル技術と神秘主義を融合させる「テクノ・シャーマニズム」の実践拠点となっていたSilent。音を「意識を別次元へ運ぶ触媒」と考える同レーベルの思想を体現するように、本作もアンビエントの手法を内面世界の探究というテーマへと結びつけています。静かな意識の離陸から始まり、自己からの脱却、宇宙的な広がりを経て全体性へと帰一する瞑想的なプロセス。民族楽器によるオーガニックでトライバルなリズムとダブ的な空間処理、さらにラスタファリやイスラム神秘主義といった宗教的モチーフがモザイク状に織り込まれ、香木の煙が立ち込める寺院に迷い込んだかのような濃密な異郷ムードを醸し出しています。アンビエントが精神世界の象徴であった時代の空気を色濃く反映しつつ、コンセプチュアルな構成でありながら曲毎のアプローチが多彩で、純粋なリスニング・ミュージックとしても充実した一作です。 

23 Degrees名義でリリースされたアルバムは、本作と翌年の「Born Of Earth's Torments」のみ。Silentのアーカイブサイトによると、その後ヘンドリックスはレーベル所属のアラウラと結婚してハワイへ移住。近年は茨城県日立市を拠点を移し、自作スタジオでの音楽制作とサーフィンを中心としたクリエイティブな生活を送っているようです。

The debut album from 23 Degrees, an ambient dub project led by Timothy Hendricks, released by the renowned San Francisco label Silent Records. In addition to Hendricks (programming/sampler), the core member, the lineup includes Bertha Matus (keyboards/bass), Roy Robinson (conga/djembe), Jahn Neff (sampler), and Steven Hitchcock (didgeridoo).

Silent Records served as a sanctuary for "techno-shamanism"—a practice merging digital technology with mysticism. Shifting from its noise and industrial roots toward a more eternal aesthetic, the label embraced chill-out and psychedelic trends. Embodying Silent’s philosophy of sound as a "catalyst to transport consciousness to another dimension," this album anchors ambient techniques in the exploration of the inner self. It maps a meditative journey: from the quiet liftoff of consciousness through self-transcendence and cosmic expansion, finally returning to a state of wholeness.

Tribal rhythms played on traditional instruments meet dub-inflected spatial processing. Religious motifs—from Rastafarianism to Islamic Sufism—are woven into a mosaic, evoking the dense, otherworldly atmosphere of a temple thick with incense. While it deeply captures the era’s spirit where ambient music symbolized the spiritual realm, the album’s diverse sonic approaches make it a compelling and sophisticated listen in its own right.

Following the release of two albums and several remixes and singles on Silent Records, the label eventually closed. Hendricks later married fellow artist Alaura and moved to Hawaii. He has since relocated to Hitachi, Ibaraki Prefecture, where he continues his creative pursuits through music production in his private studio and surfing.

極北の自然現象や孤絶した世界観をコンセプトに掲げるローマのアンビエント・レーベルGlacial Movements。その主宰者であるアレッサンドロ・テデスキが、ソロプロジェクトNetherworld名義で発表したレーベル初となるフルレングス作品。タイトルはノルウェー語で「極夜（Polar Night）」。極地で太陽が地平線上に昇らず、一日中夜が続く季節を意味しています。

氷塊が軋む音、吹雪の風鳴り、オーロラの微弱な電磁ノイズ。北極圏で実際に採取されたフィールドレコーディング音源と電子音、ドキュメンタリー音声の断片などで重層的に構築された、気状化した静謐さが広がるサウンドスケープ。ドローンの雲霧の中をゆっくりと浮き沈みする長周期のパターンと、知覚できないほどのグリッド構造。地の底から響くような超低域の脈動は、人智を超えた生命秩序の蠢きとして作用し、自律音響世界における状況＝アンビエンスの迫真性を際立たせています。孤独でありながらダークに陥らず。低明度の美しい光の存在を感じさせる秀作です。

Glacial Movements is a Rome-based ambient label dedicated to the concepts of Arctic natural phenomena and isolated worldviews. This release marks the first full-length album on the label by its founder, Alessandro Tedeschi, under his solo moniker Netherworld. The title, Norwegian for "Polar Night," refers to the season in polar regions where the sun never rises above the horizon, leaving the landscape in perpetual darkness.

The soundscape is a multi-layered construction of ethereal stillness, woven from authentic field recordings captured in the Arctic Circle, electronic tones, and documentary fragments—the groaning of ice floes, the howl of blizzards, and the faint electromagnetic hum of the aurora borealis. Long-period patterns drift slowly through clouds of drone, anchored by an almost imperceptible grid. Pulsations in the sub-bass range, resonating as if from the depths of the earth, evoke the movements of a life force beyond human comprehension, heightening the immersive realism of this autonomous sonic world. Solitary yet never veering into darkness, this is a masterful work that reveals the presence of a beautiful, low-luminosity light.

現代社会や政治を鋭く風刺する小説家であり、劇作家、ビジュアルアーティスト、脚本家、ミクソロジストの顔も持つ多才な芸術家ケヴィン・ポスチュパックが、ミュージシャンとして活動していた80年代に自主レーベルから発表したソロアルバム。1983年1月と6月、コネチカット州のスタジオにて録音。クラシック/スチール弦ギター、テナーリコーダー、ウィンドチャイムといったすべての楽器を彼自身が演奏しています。

ポスチュパックの音楽性は、ジャズ、クラシック、フォーク、ミニマリズムのあいだに位置する混成スタイル。装飾を排したフレージングと余白を活かした構成に、時にスペイン近代ギターの語法や旋法的なアプローチを交えながら、影を帯びた内省的な曲想を淡々と描き出していきます。A面はタイトル曲をはじめ、美しい流れを持つ私的な心象スケッチ群。B面では、キース・ジャレットやジョン・マクラフリンへの敬意を表した楽曲（B1-2）、スティーヴン・クラムと共作（B3-4）など、より動的に外の世界へ意識を広げつつも、根底にある透徹した世界観は変わらず。息遣いが聴こえてくるような親密なレコーディングも相まって、作者の内面世界へと静かに引き寄せられていきます。

St.GIGAアーカイヴ「Ebb tide A」より。アメリカのフュージョン系ギタリストSteve Khan（スティーヴ・カーン）による、Joe Zawinul（ジョー・ザヴィヌル）作品のカバー。敬愛する巨匠たちの名曲を繊細なアレンジで再構築した1980年のアルバム「Evidence」に収録。アコースティック・ギター（6弦・12弦）とエレクトリック・ギターが多重録音で丹念に重ねられ、時に低音弦のループを半速再生させるなど、彼独特の緻密なスタジオ・テクニックが施されています。ニューエイジ・ジャズ的な手触りがあり、どこか懐かしいような穏やかで心地よい余韻が感じられるナンバーです。
