2000年代後期からメルボルンを拠点に活動するデュオプロジェクトSuperstar。初期の実験的なカセット作品を経て、地元のインディレーベルBedroom Suck Recordsから発表した2作目となるアルバム。メンバーはSweet Whirl名義でも知られるEsther Edquist（ヴォーカル/鍵盤）と、Keiran Hegarty（ギター/ドラムマシン）。夏が過ぎ去った海岸線を眺めるような静かなイントロダクションから、チープな打ち込みとシンセ、ギターと歌声という簡素な編成で繰り広げられる、ひんやりと郷愁を帯びたドリームポップ。Edquistの物憂げで呟くようなヴォーカルの傍らで、HegartyがVini ReillyやMaurice Deebankを彷彿とさせる煌びやかなギターフレーズを絶えず奏でていて、そのどちらも主役になりそうでならない絶妙なバランスが印象的です。80年代のDIYバンドとも見紛うサウンドですが、当時はオブスキュアな発掘音源が立て続けにリイシューされ、現行アーティストもそれらを参照しつつ、古い機材を使った宅録作品をリリースしていた時期で、そうした再発盤と新譜の境界が曖昧だった2010年代半ばのインディ/バレアリック界隈の空気感を思い起こさせてくれます。
Superstar is a Melbourne-based duo active since the late 2000s. Following their early experimental cassette releases, this is their second album, published by the local indie label Bedroom Suck Records. The project consists of Esther Edquist (vocals/keyboards), also known as Sweet Whirl, and Keiran Hegarty (guitar/drum machine).
Opening with a quiet introduction reminiscent of gazing at a desolate coastline after summer, the album unfolds into cool, nostalgic dream pop built from a modest setup: simple drum-machine programming, synths, guitar, and vocals. Alongside Edquist’s wistful, murmuring vocals, Hegarty constantly weaves shimmering guitar phrases reminiscent of Vini Reilly or Maurice Deebank. Neither takes center stage, yet both maintain a delicate, captivating balance.
While the sound could easily pass for an '80s DIY band, it is also a product of its time. The mid-2010s saw a wave of obscure archival recordings being reissued, inspiring contemporary artists to release home-recorded works using vintage gear. This album captures that distinct mid-2010s indie and Balearic atmosphere, where the boundary between forgotten reissues and new releases felt beautifully blurred.
