「ロシアのジャズを作り、反乱の精神をもたらした男」と評されるモスクワ出身のサックス奏者／コンポーザーAlexey Kozlov（アレクセイ・コズロフ）が率いるグループArsenal（アーセナル）の通算5枚目となる91年作品。旧ソ連初のジャズロック・バンドとして73年に結成。様々なスタイルを混在させ、80年代中期以降はシンセサイザーを大々的に導入するなど、作品ごとにサウンドを変化させてきたグループですが、本作ではその創造性・実験性を高まりを示すように、静動の対比と空間性を強調した幻想的なサウンドが主調となっています。A面は、ブルージーなギターソロとホーン・セクションを中心としたパワフルなアンサンブルを奏でるA1から、冷たい質感のパッドの上をキーボードやサックスの哀感漂うソロパートが続くA2、ディレイの効いたアコースティック・ギターが余韻豊かに爪弾かれるA3へ。B面は、夜空を浮遊するように各パートがフリーフォームに絡み合うB1から、印象的なシーケンス・フレーズにスペーシーなキーボードのメロディが重なるハイライトB2、コズロフの感動的なサックスソロが舞うB3へ。全編通じてスピリチュアルな音空間、哀愁と静かな情念をたたえたメロディパートの組み合わせが秀逸です。

B.J. Smith returns to NuNorthern Soul after a short break from his last outing ‘Between Ship and Shore parts 1,2 & 3’ to bring us an incredible selection of audio journeys through ambience. A much in-demand collaborator who excels in both acoustic and electric guitar formats, who has played with the likes of afro-dub disco act Akwaaba, Nuphonic band FUG, Krautrock legend Holger Czukay and is currently a member of Smith & Mudd and White Elephant. He has confounded expectations not only with the versatility of his playing, but in the music he is capable of creating and on the instruments he chooses to do so. Nowhere will that be more apparent than on this, his latest album for NuNorthern Soul.
Produced using a strict recording technique with spontaneous composition at its heart, this album sees B.J. Smith explore an ambient and meditative music he's previously not been known for. Gone are the disco beats and, on many tracks, the percussion altogether in favour of multiple layers of Smith's many instruments. Aside from the assistance on some tracks by a hang drum player, every other sound you hear on this album comes from Smith himself, improvising each live performance, purposefully avoiding loops and samples.
Smith admits that he was listening to 'Ambient 1: Music for Airports' by Brian Eno and featuring Robert Wyatt when he first laid down the initial tracks for the album in 2013. It has taken until now to refine the recordings and for both Smith and NuNorthern Soul to release what stands as a distinct departure for both.

イギリスの公共テレビ局チャンネル4で1990年8月に放送された、スペイン・イビサ島のクラブ・カルチャーを題材とするドキュメンタリー番組「A Short Film About Chilling」。Terry Farley、Charlie Chester、Rocky & Diesel、The Farm、808 Stateなど、DJ・ミュージシャンへのインタビューやライブ映像を交え、ヨーロッパのダンス・ミュージック〜チルアウト・ムーブメントの中心地として隆盛するイビサの動勢を捉えた30分。監督は、Creation Records所属のアーティストのMVを手がけたことで知られるAngus Cameron（アンガス・キャメロン）。

昨年、Franco Nanniのアルバム「Elicoide」を復刻した〈Affordable Inner Space〉とは別に、ローマ拠点のレーベルElectronique.itの傘下に設けられたもう一つのレトロスペクティヴ部門〈Lost In It〉より、ギリシャのアンビエント・プロジェクトParallel Worlds（パラレル・ワールズ）の初期音源集がリリース。Parallel Worldsは、アテネ出身の音楽家Bakis Sirros（バキス・シロス）のソロ名義として1994年に始動。90年代後期から国内のエレクトロニック・ミュージック・シーンで活動し、2003年の「Existence」を皮切りに、これまで国内外の複数のレーベルからソロ・アルバムと、Alio DieやIan Boddyのようなアンビエントの重鎮作家との共作アルバムを発表しています。「Existence」以前、95年から97年にかけて、アテネにあるウェイヴマウンテン・スタジオで多数のアナログシンセやシーケンサーを駆使して制作されたという本作。Klaus SchulzeやPete Namlookなどドイツ勢からの強い影響と同時期のIDM／エレクトロニカをブレンドさせたような、荒涼とした近未来風景とメランコリックな情感を呼び起こすアンビエント・サウンドが全編にわたって展開されています。テクノ／ハウス／ミニマリズムの視点から80-90年代のエレクトロニック・ミュージックを回顧しつつ、意外な音楽家にスポットを当て続ける〈Lost In It〉と〈Affordable Inner Space〉。タイトル数はまだ多くはないですが、今後のリリース展開もかなり気になるレーベルです。

Parallel Worlds’ music is a combination of dreamy/atmospheric textures with pure analogue electronic rhythms and sequences, combining the feel of 70s electronic music with modern electronica and ambient music. For Parallel Worlds, melody is essential, but most important is emotional context. Parallel Worlds are the main project of Bakis Sirros with John Sirros (and some occasional collaborators). They were originally born in 1994, but only after 1998 they started to be a part of the active greek electronic music scene.  Parallel Worlds have collaborated, so far, with established Italian ambient composer Alio Die, with the very well-known UK electronic music master Ian Boddy, and with the music professor Dave Bessell (member of the NODE synth supergroup). Bakis Sirros also participates on some collaboration projects, the project “Interconnected” with the german musician Ingo Zobel (of DRON, Signalform, Self Oscillate, Datasette, etc.), the ambient / experimental project “Memory Geist” with the australian electronica musician Steve Law (of Zen Paradox, Starseed Transmission, Guild Of Fire, etc.). Bakis Sirros has also teached Synthesizer Programming at an (after-high-school) public learning institution and also instructed a Workshop on Analogue Modular Synthesis in Synch Festival 2008. ▲

旧ユーゴスラビアの知られざるエレクトロニック・ミュージックを発掘するインディペンデント・レーベルDiscomより、80年代ベオグラードで活動していたシンセポップ・バンドConsequential（コンセクエンシャル）の未発表音源集がリリース。メンバーは、同レーベルからリリースされたDATAやŠizikeなどのプロジェクトの仕掛人でもある重要人物Zoran Jevtić（ゾラン・イェヴティッチ）と、国内初となる電子音楽スタジオを設立したNikolaj Bežek（ニコライ・ベゼク）。

私たちが旧ユーゴスラビアの音楽に取り組んでいるように、ある地域に残された音楽をリリースすることに焦点を置く場合、発掘すべき質の高い音源がなくなってしまうのは恐ろしいことです。しかし、情熱と高い倫理基準を持っているなら、その願望は、音楽愛好家だけでなく、アーティスト自身によっても評価され始め、時にアーティストが忘れられた作品を救うために密接に関わってくることさえあります。今回、ユーゴスラビアの電子音楽の先駆者であるゾラン・イェヴティッチ（DATA、Šizike、The Master Scratch Band、Digitronの創設メンバー）とニコライ・ベゼク（ベオグラードの初期エレクトロニック・シーンの重要な貢献者）との関係は、職業上の境界を越え、初期ユーゴスラビアン・エレクトロニカを明らかにするという使命を私たちに与えてくれました。私たちの新しいリリース「MicroComposed 1980-86」は、その相互の労力の成果です。このレコードは、彼らのグループConsequentialによって1980年から86年にかけて作曲され、ベオグラードのセルダーヨラ通りにあったユーゴスラビア初の純粋な電子音楽スタジオで録音された、10曲の未発表曲コレクションです。この地域的条件においては非常に希少で、不可欠な、ローランド製アナログシーケンサーMC-4B、モジュラーシンセSYSTEM-100M、ボコーダーSVC-350とVP-330のような機材のおかげで、イェヴティッチとベゼクはキャッチーなボコーダーと80年代の実験的エレクトロニカ、イタロディスコとシンセポップからの強い影響を組み合わせ、彼らが本当に好きな音楽を作り出すことができました。

Consequential is synth-pop band active in period between 1980 and 1986 in Belgrade, former Yugoslavia. It is founded by Zoran Jevtić (DATA, Šizike, The Master Scratch Band, Digitron) and Nikolaj Bežek (the founder one of Yugoslavia's first purely electronic music oriented studios, in Serdar Jola Street, Belgrade). The duo's equipment included: Roland MC-4B Microcomposer & OP8 Interface, System 100M, TR-808, TR-707, Juno 60, SH-101, SVC-350, VP-330 Vocoders, Korg Mono Poly, Polysix & MS10, Sequential Circuits Pro-One & Drumtracks, RSF Kobol and a Simmons drum module.

[224.1] Radio Relativa 10TRAX

10月8日にマドリッドのオンラインラジオRadio Relativaで放送されたミックスが、Relativaのサウンドクラウドで公開になりました。「ジャンル・時間制限なしの10曲」というコンセプトの10TRAXシリーズ。今回、フュージョンやスムースジャズのトラックを中心に選曲しています。 
Radio Relativaは、音楽・アート・建築・グラフィティなど共通の趣味をもつ学生により6年前に始動したプロジェクトUndermadが母体となって、今年2月に新たに立ち上げられたラジオ局。現在Undermadのクルーは6〜7名で、それぞれが異なる場所で、Limbo Clubなどのパーティーを主催しながら、オンラインでのアートインタビューやラジオの放送に取り組まれています。彼らの過去5年の活動については、ストリートカルチャーを発信するウェブマガジン25 Gramosの特設ページ「5 años de Undermad」に詳しく書かれています。 
今回ミックスシリーズに参加するきっかけになったのは、UndermadのメンバーであるMiguel Martinezからいただいたメッセージでした。LYL Radioでの3月の放送（スペインのギタリストMiguel Herreroの特集回）を聴いてくださったといい、また、以前彼らが関わったパーティーにSuso Sáizが出演したことを教えてくれました。医師になるための勉強をされているMiguelさんがギャップイヤーで本国を離れている間、やりとりを引き次いでくれたのが、もう1人のメンバーPablo Losa Andrés。元々は別の設立メンバーが始めた10TRAXシリーズは、現在この2人が中心になって続けられています。彼らとのメッセージの交換を通じてスペインのアンダーグラウンドなシーンを知り、身近に感じられたのは、自分にとってとても嬉しいことでした。Miguelさん、Pabloさん、声をかけてくださりありがとうございました。
