「なぜ打楽器はバンドの主役になれないのか？」という問いから、Mies Wilbrink（ミース・ヴィルブリンク）とWillem van Kruijsdijk（ヴィレム・ファン・クルイシュダイク）のオランダ人カップルにより80年代初頭に旗揚げされたパーカッション・グループSlagerij van Kampen（スラフライ・ファン・カンペン）。1982年からオルタナティヴなクラブシーンで、パーカッショニスト4名編成によるアコースティック・ライブを積み重ね、86年に初作となるライブ・アルバムを低予算で制作。その後、MIDIとサンプリング技術を導入し、87年のアルバム「Out Of The Doldrums」ではパーカッションとエレクトロニック・サウンドを融合した新機軸を打ち出し、彼らのスタイルを確立させました。続く3作目となるアルバム「A Long Walk On A Short Pier」は、ニューヨークのレーベルTomato Recordsから。ミックス／プロデュースは、NYダウンタウンの先鋭ギタリストRobert Musso（ロバート・マッソ）。今作の題材となっているのは、南アフリカのズールーやマリのテレムといった先住民族。アパルトヘイト政策撤廃前夜の89年、かつて南アフリカの地に入植し白人社会が生まれる発端となったオランダ側から、ブラックアフリカの音楽と、世界中で迫害を受けてきた先住民族へのオマージュを込め、反人種差別や環境保護といった社会的メッセージを発信しつつ、精気漂うイマジナリーなトライバル・ミュージックを全編にわたって展開した、当時のワールド・ミュージック熱も感じさせる作品です。創立者の2人は健康上の理由からステージでのパフォーマンスから退きますが、以降は監督・プロデューサーとして、4名のマルチ・パーカッショニストと複数の楽器を加えた新編成メンバーとともに現在も精力的に活動中。

身体を使って音を出すボディビートボックスのワークショップや、打楽器アンサンブルとして活動しているオランダ・ロッテルダム在住のピメンテル一家＝Kriya Familia（クリヤ・ファミリア）。その一人、8歳の頃に活動をはじめた息子Julinho（ジュリニョ）ことJúlio César Hagen Pimentel（ジュリオ・セサー・ハーゲン・ピメンテル）は、ジャグリングボールを打楽器のように操りながらリズムを刻むジャグリング・アーティストで、若きリーダー的存在。彼らがコンサートの成功を機にオランダに移住したのが2001年。その以前はブラジル・リオデジャネイロ隣の町ニテロイを拠点に、陰陽思想に基づく玄米菜食や自然療法を実践し、ヨーガやダンス、音楽を勤しむコミューン的規模の創作生活を送っていました。その一家の支柱が、Julinhoの父親であるJúlio César Pimentel（ジュリオ・セサー・ピメンテル）。本作「クリヤ・インストゥルメンタル」は、マルチ奏者である父Júlioが作曲・コンセプト・振り付けを主導し、馴染みのジャズ・プレイヤーたちと録音した自主制作盤。8人兄弟の写真の中に1-2歳のJulinho（90年生まれ）の姿が写っているので、おそらく92-93年頃のリリースと思われます。父Júlio以外の主なメンバーは、Geraldo Brandãoがシンセ、Ezio Filhoがベース、Marcelo Martinsがサックスとフルート、Caetano Rotundoが打楽器という編成。水甕のヒタヒタとした音が響く "Chá" は、代謝を整え病気を治すために彼らが飲むハーブティのこと。玄米食に欠かせない胡麻塩を作る "Gersal" は、胡麻を炒るチリチリという音にはじまり、小刻みに打ち鳴らされるコンガ・ボンゴ、乳鉢を搗くリズム、ガスボンベの金属音。"Banho De Césio"（セシウムのお風呂の意）は、放射性廃棄物用の黄色いドラム缶を再利用したお風呂を叩く音、南インドの太鼓ムリダンガム、子ども達の声やバシャバシャという水の音──クリヤ・ファミリアの生活に息づく様々な音を使い、その理念をパーカッシヴなエスニック・ジャズで表現した、迸るような生命感を放つ作品です。

90年代以降、シンバルやゴングなどのメタル・クラフト/音響彫刻のデザイナーとして、ヨーロッパを巡りながら各地のレーベルに作品を残しているウェールズ出身の打楽器奏者Steve Hubback（スティーヴ・ハバック）。墓地や森の中など特殊な場所での演奏、自作楽器に見られる魔術/元始宗教的モティーフなど超俗なアイデアをもつ方で、ゴングの彫刻はヒーリング/セラピー/シャーマニズムなどスピリチュアルな分野で支持されているといいます。「The Quest」はデンマークのマイナー・レーベルSpoofから発表された93年のソロ作。Hammer Harp、Bowed Steel Harp Sculpture、Tuned Gongs、Fire Gongs、Ice Chimesなどの金属製楽器を用いて、それらがもつスピリットに導かれるまま音楽の原初へ回帰する、ミニマリスティックなエスニック・アンビエント。

It’s a long story, so here’s the short version. I lived as a drummer and percussionist from 1980 to 1990. I was always looking for special sounds and in 1990 in Scandinavia I began to learn metal craft so I could create my own instruments. Within 2 years I had some of the North’s best musicians performing on my creations. I had a powerful lucid dream in which I saw a drummer playing on a Norwegian mountain. His drum set was otherworldly and instead of playing a ride cymbal he played a living bronze Dragons wing. The sound was enchanting and magical and the audience were in trance. The dream stayed with me and after much thought and experimentation I forged my first Dragon cymbal sculpture in the early 1990′s. This was how I invented and pioneered cymbal and gong sculpting. Since then my path unfolds in mysterious ways. My gong sculptures are used by many people involved with shamanism. Sound healing/therapy and ocultists. My gongs have sounds and energies unlike any others. Deep, powerful and resonant. They are excellent healing and meditative tools. I’ve been making very high quality Sistrums for years. Each bronze bell is forged into shape, tuned and lathed. I also spend a lot of time in various countries finding suitable wood for my Sistrums. Water as a sound source has fascinated me for many years. Water appears in many different forms, and all these forms have their own sound: flowing water, dripping water, rain, waves, waterfalls, splashing, bubbling or cracking in the form of ice. We encounter all these different sounds in our everyday lives, as people have done throughout time. The sound and the experience of water have throughout history been used consciously. Many are aware of the calming effect of sitting and listening to waves breaking on a beach, or to the sound of a waterfall. Modern technology has made it possible for our generation to listen to the sounds of nature in a new way. The time element can be changed. We can listen to the sounds at a faster or slower tempo than the original, or we can even listen to them backwards. We can focus on certain parts of the overtone spectrum, we can change the order of the sounds, or we can just use the sounds as they are, but put them in an unfamiliar context. Abstracting sounds from our environment, such as water, and putting them into a musical context fascinates me. Thus we can experience the sound of a drop of water as pure sound, instead of a warning of leakage. As another main element of this piece I have let calculations from numerology decide how various musical parameters will develop. Numerology is an old occult science, which, on the basis of a person’s name and date of birth, can say something about his personality and destiny, as astrology can on the basis of the positions of stars and planets. I have used the word "water" in different languages as basic material: the Latin AQUA, the English WATER, the Norwegian VANN and the French EAU. Using the different combinations of numbers and pitches derived from these words, I have arrived at melody, chords, rhythm and form. I do not believe I have come closer to the phenomenon of Water by doing this, but numerology gives me a new way of thinking about music. I had two special instruments constructed for this piece, which I have called Sea Wheels. They are made of Plexiglas and were built by the sculptor Tor Hvammen. The tape for Aqua was realized in Ny York Studio in Oslo with technician Haakon Manheim. Kjetil Bjerkestrand assisted me as programmer and operator of the computer and synthesizer systems Fairlight and Emulator. I would like to express my deep gratitude to these people for their invaluable help during the making of the tape. The work Aqua was commissioned by the Collage Dance Company and choreographer Lise Nordal in 1986. The work was originally a part of a multi media performance consisting of dance, music, video, slide projections, light and sceneography. Aqua had its world premier at the Black Box Theatre in Oslo, November 21, 1986.

Dopo una pausa (a livello solistico) durata 14 anni, Vaccina registra nel 1992 quest'album per la piccola casa discografica Lynx di Firenze. Disco più comunicativo del precedente, è anche il mio preferito del quartetto proposto in questo superpost. Non conosco la formazione che vi prese parte, ma sono certo che la voce di Juri Camisasca c'è in quest'album e, in alcune canzoni, ha un ruolo di primo piano (su tutte "Radiofonic song", che chiude in splendida maniera l'album). Per il resto, sopraffina world music con largo uso di strumenti percussivi di tutti i tipi. Se volete fare conoscenza con l'artista, questo è lavoro da cui iniziare, ascoltate il mio consiglio. Sebbene dal 1978 al 1992 non esca nessun lavoro personale, Lino Capra Vaccina collabora a incisioni discografiche di diversi Artisti: ricordiamo, tra gli altri, Juri Camisasca, Alice, Giorgio Gaber, Giuni Russo.

Frank MICHIELS, born in a musical family, studied musicology at the Leuven University and percussion at the music academy of Etterbeek, Brussels. His carreer covers a wide scope of musical fields : jazz, pop music, ethnic music. In the jazz world, he had the opportunity to play with MILKSHAKE BANANE - with a.o. Johan and Peter VANDENDRIESSCHE (saxes), Toots THIELEMANS, Philip CATHERINE, the European Jazz Big Band. Very active in the recording studios, he worked with Myriam MAKEBA, Mory KANTE, the group SOULSISTER and many others. Frank MICHIELS is also a music ethnologist. Very interested by African music, he works for the world famous "Royal Museum of Centra Africa" in Tervueren (Belgium). He also did research work in countries such as Congo, Rwanda, Kenya, Puerto-Rico, Ivory Coast, etc... For ten years, he teaches percussion at the Royal Music Conservatory in Brussels. Recently, he was involved in the BIORITMIX project, which appeared in Brussels and was a unique gathering of percussionnists from the whole world : Trilok GURTU (India), Madjid KHALADJ (Iran), Doudou 'N Daye ROSE (Senegal), KIAN-ZO (Ivory Coast), Hiba Burundi drummers, the Gamelan duo Made (Indonesia), etc... On this occasion, these artists were guests of his own 10 piece BELGIAN PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE. He also participated in the albums of the band "The Demagogue Reacts" with Johan VANDENDRIESSCHE, titled "Action Reaction" & "Kazzbah".
