スウェーデン放送電子スタジオ製作のpreアンビエント/ミニマル名作。ジャズ・オーケストラのトロンボーン奏者として活動をはじめたFolke Rabe（フォルケ・ラーベ）は、室内楽・劇場音楽・テープ音楽などの作曲のほか、時にはダンサー・俳優として舞台に立ち、教育の場にも関わる等、広範囲にわたる経歴を持つ作曲家。一方、Bo Anders Persson（ボ・アンデシュ・パーション）は、エンジニアを経て、北欧のアモン・デュールと称されるグループTräd, Gräs Och Stenarのフロントに立ったロック畑のプレイヤーで、両者とも記譜法に依存した伝統的な音楽に疑問を抱いたことから、より音響重視の実験へ向かったそうです。
自ら「マイクロミュージック」と称するRabeサイドは、点滅をしながら一直線に伸びてゆくハーモニックな響きの内部で生まれる幻覚のような相互干渉に焦点を当てたもので、持続音の中を旅する「心地よさ」を意欲的に追求。Perssonサイドは、声の素材が次第にプリミティヴなリズム、アブストラクトな音像に変質してゆく過程が「I Am Sitting In A Room」を連想させる実験性の強い作品で、西洋の記譜法をある種の暴力や抑圧と捉え、飢えた世界に対し、先進国の過剰な食糧生産を差して「タンパク質帝国主義」と批判を込めたタイトルが付けられています。
Rabeの "Was??" は、USオルタナティヴ・シーンでミニマリズムが盛んに唱えられた頃の97年に、Drag City傘下のDexter's Cigar（キュレーターはGastr Del Solとして活動していたJim O'RourkeとDavid Grubbs）より「What??」というタイトルでリリースされ、標準速に加え半速バージョンを収録。Perssonの "Proteinimperialism" は、今年Subliminal Soundsからリリースされた編集盤「Love Is Here to Stay」に収録されています。

民俗学者Theo Brownに感化を受けたというIan Humberstone（イアン・ハンバーストーン）とDavid Chatton Barker（デビッド・シャトン・ベイカー）が「グレートブリテン最奥部の自然、民俗、神話や怪奇現象のリサーチ」をコンセプトに立ち上げたマルチメディア・レーベル/プロジェクトFolklore Tapes。Miscellaneousシリーズ2作目として、Barkerのソロ名義で今年3月にリリースされた7インチ作「Twelve Stations」。タイトルが示す通り、12ヶ所の駅を巡るフィールドワークに基づき、鉄道労働者で結成されたエクセター鉄道ブラスバンドの演奏を、人々の気配や周辺の環境音ごと収録。全体で7分強と短いですが、産業革命の象徴的な発明である蒸気機関車や、労働者にまつわる物語を題材に、そのリサーチによる立証性と空想性が綯い交じる「The Sinking Of The Titanic」のような回想的音風景といった趣。シルク刷のジャケット、写真や楽譜を載せた小冊子、ダウンロードコードが記された乗車券型カードがセットになった、一貫したパッケージも素晴らしいです。（初版200部はレーベルでは完売。現在は音楽配信サイトBleepで購入できます。）
Folklore Tapesは他に、シモンズベリーのドーセット周辺の埋もれた音源を発掘するThe Lost Tapes Record Club/Radiolore Series（おそらくラジオで放送された音源によるもの）、キリスト教以前の農耕儀式にフォーカスしたCalendar Customs、同じく民間伝承を主題に各面異なる作家がキュレーションを担当したカセットをハードカバーに収めたLancashire Folklore Tapesなどのシリーズがあり、いずれも古い時代の信仰や風習といった題材に相応しいハンドメイドならではのアイデアが詰まった装丁。Dust-to-Digital、Sublime Frequencies、Mississippi Recordsなどに比肩するフォークロア/ヘリテージへの探求心を、ごくローカルに傾注し、偏執的にコンパイルするという特色をもったプロジェクトだと思います。

1943年フィラデルフィア生まれのLaraaji Nanananda、本名はEdward Larry Gordon。Larry G＝Laraaji。ハワード大学卒業後、ニューヨークでスタンダップ・コメディの道へ。東洋の神秘思想に没頭していた70年代前期、質屋でツィターを手にしたことから路上パフォーマーとして活動を開始。本名名義での初作「Celestial Vibration」をリリースした78年にグリニッジ・ヴィレッジでバスキングしていたところをBrian Enoにスカウトされ、アンビエント・シリーズ3番「Day Of Radiance」（ソロでは3作目）で一躍有名になりました。Eno/All Saints関連の作品をはじめ、Vital Body Marketing、Audionといったニューエイジ系レーベル、特にミニマル/ドローン路線のインストゥルメンタル作品が広く知られていますが、そのほかにも、歌ものやフィールド録音など多数のプライベート作品をリリースしています。本作は、84年にリリースされたおそらく4作目にあたるカセット作品を、2006年にリミックスしたCDR版。ツィター/ハンマード・ダルシマーや鳴り物のキラキラとしたアンビエンスに、ここではリズムマシンをバックに鍵盤を奏で、インスピレーションの赴くまま高らかに歌い上げるLaraaji。「Day Of Radiance」系統のツィター・アンビエンスが涅槃寂静へ導くものだとすれば、こちらは多神教的な信仰世界（歌にはシヴァーヤやアッラーフといった神や法蓮経が登場し、彼の身にまとったオレンジの布は太陽への信仰を意味する）から、心の開放、宇宙や愛といったポジティヴなメッセージを伝えようとする、シンガー・ソングライターとしての側面が全面に表れています。

In September 2013, Rachel Evans committed to recording and releasing an album per month, each dedicated to the full moon of that particular month. Each album consists of one single, long-form composition using electronics, synthesizers and voice, totaling between 50 and 58 minutes in duration. The album names were taken from the Native American names for each month's full moon, and each was released as close to or on the date of that month's full moon. The albums were originally self-released in hand-numbered editions of 50 Cdrs, with each season (or set of three) having a different design and packaging scheme. In August of 2014 Rachel concluded and released the final recording. Beginning on September 9, 2014 pre-orders will become available for the six tape box set edition of these albums, which will include all twelve Ballades, one per side. Due to the limited capacity of cassettes for this version, three of the compositions have been trimmed so that no side exceeds 55 minutes. Even so, the full duration of this box set's audio is 10 hours and 37 minutes. Editions include six pro-dubbed and imprinted cassettes, housed in an oversized plastic box, with a two-sided 2015 lunar calendar designed by Rachel Evans. Edition of 100. - Hooker Vision

宇宙的な感性、精神性や無限性を象徴する「青」という色彩に生涯執着し、自ら理想とする深い青色「インターナショナル・クライン・ブルー」の顔料を使い、モノクロミスム（単色主義）作品を発表したニース生まれの芸術家Yves Klein（イブ・クライン）。ヌードモデルの体に顔料を塗り、巨大なカンヴァスに人拓を押すという有名なパフォーマンス「人体測定」を1960年より行い、その中で10人編成のオーケストラを自ら指揮して披露した自作曲が「Monotone Symphony」。1947年から48年にかけて構想、49年に作曲されたこの曲は、20分のドローン部と20分の沈黙で構成される約40分の作品で、La Monte YoungのドローンやJohn Cage「4分33秒」の類例としても挙げられます。
○無音/長休符で構成された曲の先例として、Alphonse Allaisの1897年作「Funeral March for the Obsequies of a Deaf Man」（耳の不自由なある偉人の葬儀のために作曲された葬送行進曲）、Erwin Schulhoffの1919年作「Fünf Pittoresken, Op. 31: No. 3. In futurum」（5つの演奏会小品 op.3 第3曲未来に）があります。
本作「Monotone Symphony」の作者は、美術館やギャラリーの空間演出、映画やコンテンポラリー・ダンスのための楽曲を手掛けるロンドンの作曲家Martin A. Smith（マーティン・A・スミス）。初演から50年を記念して行われた2010年のパフォーマンスのための劇伴で、原曲の前半20分間を新たな視点で解釈し、コーラスやKleinのスピーチといったマテリアルを回想の断片として取り入れ、美しいアンビエント・ドローンへ発展させています。

In March 1960, at the Galerie Internationale d’Art Contemporain, Paris, Yves Klein presented his Monotone Symphony and Anthropometries of the Blue Period. Whilst a ten-piece orchestra played the Monotone Symphony, a work consisting of a single tone, three naked models rolled themselves in blue paint and then pressed their bodies onto giant pieces of paper to create paintings. Klein’s idea was to distance the artist from the creation of the work, for the models to directly create the images.
