[043] Mixmaster Morris - Ambient Classics Mix

Tribute To: Ambient Classics Mix

Although he’s often referred to as the “Godfather of Chillout”, that lofty title doesn’t come close to encapsulating Morris Gould’s extensive body of work. His work as a DJ dates back to 1985, where he was on the team at London pirate radio station Network 21 – it was the station manager who suggested he take the name Mixmaster Morris. He was also involved with KISS FM during its early days as a pirate outlet, and in 1987, Gould adopted another moniker, The Irresistible Force, and issued a number of singles before the project’s 1992 debut full-length Flying High caught fire with its relaxed rhythms. The album, along with 1994’s Global Chillage, continues to be regarded as one of the touchstone ambient LPs today. He’s also been responsible for a number of highly regarded mix CDs over the years, including The Morning After (1997) and Abstract Funk Theory (2000). Gould also turned out a classic remix of Coldcut’s seminal Autumn Leaves track, made a collaborative album with Jonah Sharp and Haruomi Hosono of Yellow Magic Orchestra, helped found The Big Chill festival and also ran a multitude of DJ nights and residencies. Even now, more than 30 years into his career, he continues to play all over the world.
