Last month, a mellow, languid guitar instrumental playing at the beginning of JET STREAM caught my ear. Looking up the song, I discovered it was “Midnight Beach” by Blast Head. The duo, formed by DJ Hikaru and Tetsu, was active from the ’90s through the 2000s, and this track comes from their 2009 album Nu Island, which I had not heard until now. The entire album is wonderful, and belatedly, I find myself listening to it on repeat.
Blast Head often brings to mind a deep inner trip—a feeling of losing oneself in an intricate blend of stateless, eclectic soundscapes. While this album retains that psychedelic sensibility, a more open, tropical, and organic sound moves to the forefront. The seamless progression in the middle section feels as though you are listening to a single, continuous mix. As the title Nu Island suggests, it evokes vivid and dazzling imagery of an imaginary tropical resort. On JET STREAM, the sequence flowing from “Midnight Beach” to Steve Hiett’s “Sleep Walk” and B.J. Cole’s “Gnossienne No. 5” was also delightful.
