2010年より、ローカルと各国の音楽シーンを結ぶ主要拠点となっているアムステルダム・レッドライトのオンライン・ラジオ局Red Light Radio。その番組のひとつで、ディスコ/ジャズ/アヴァン/ニューエイジなど、知られざる作家や国ごとに焦点をあてた特集を組む「All Around The Globe」。過去のアーカイヴより6月2日放送回、同国で80年代に活動したシンセ/アンビエント作家Enno Velthuys（エノ・ヴェルジュイス）の特集。

[994.1] The Wind Collector / As Witness Our Hands

新たにマスタリングした2枚組CD「The Wind Collector/As Witness Our Hands」の収録曲は89-90年の間に録音された。このディフィニティブ・エディションはスタジオ・プロデュース/アシスタント・キーボード/アレンジを務めたAlessandro Pizzinにより編集/曲順構成される。ディスク1は完全な8トラック・マスターテープから、オリジナル・トラックに加え未発表トラックと2つのインプロヴィゼーション。ディスク2はリファレンスカセットに残された5時間を超えるデモセッションやリハーサル、インプロヴィゼーションから選曲され、それらは決して完全な出来ではないが、私達の音楽に対してより広いパースペクティブを与えるだろう。録音はイタリア・パドヴァの地下スタジオで、時間や金銭的な制限のない理想的な環境の中で行われた。小型グランドピアノと優れたレコーディング機器などさまざまな設備の使用許可を得たことで、アイデアをリアルタイムで具現化できたことを覚えている。その音楽は、エレクトロニクスとアコースティック楽器、歌/ハーモニーとノイズ/実験を調和させる、メンバーの意図を映し出した。今改めて聞いてみると、お互い聞きあうことなくして単旋律を弾こうとしなかったことが明確に分かる。私達は残念ながらディストリビューションや取引に恵まれなかった。25年ほど経った今、「The Wind Collector」に新たなリスナーが現れたようだ。若いDJが書いたように、たぶん私達は無意識のうちに時代の先へ向かっていたのだろう。

Jim O'RourkeやJohn Zorn、Thurston Mooreらがその作風にインスパイアされたという、ケルンの実験音楽家Hajsch（ハーシュ）とMonika Westphal（モニカ・ウェストファル）による男女音響ユニットPFNが、Hajsch主宰のQuiet Artworksよりリリースした92年作。不穏な軋み、鈍く響く跫音や物音、自動記述的に鍵盤を打つピアノ、虫のようにあたりを掠めながら持続する電子音。Westphalの操作する具体音とHajschのエレクトロニクスによる前半の妖気なノイズ・コンクレートから、'Akasa'ではチェロとバイオリン、映画監督Cleo Uebelmannに捧ぐ"Für Cleo"ではサックス、それぞれ物悲しくも美しいドローン/アンビエンスへ。同年リリースされたHajsch名義の「Nagual (Für Silvio Manuel)」とあわせ、2003年にSonigよりニュー・マスタリング版「1992」としてリイシュー。

John Driscoll is a founding member of Composers Inside Electronics and collaborated on and managed the Rainforest IV project since its inception in 1973. He has toured extensively in the US and Europe with: Composers Inside Electronics, Douglas Dunn & Dancers, David Tudor, and also as a solo performer. His work involves robotic instruments, compositions and sound installations for unique architectural spaces, rotating loudspeakers, and music for dance. He has received dance commissions for his music including: the Merce Cunningham Dance Co., Douglas Dunn & Dancers, and the Dance Construction Company. He has received numerous awards including a Berlin Residency from the DAAD Berliner Künstlerprogam. Driscoll was Manager of Arts & Technologies at the New York Hall of Science where he created an innovative Artist-in-Residence program. He also developed the first interactive computer-based exhibits in science museums titled "Science Links" and managed the development of "Sound Sensations" (an interactive exhibition on Audio Technologies) for the NYHOS. He founded Shadow Interactive Inc. which developed educational software for Classroom Inc., Shedd Aquarium, NY State Dept. of Health, and others. He worked for over 15 years with Slingo Inc. developing one of the most popular online games on AOL titled "Slingo", slot machines, lottery tickets, and TV game shows. Driscoll has lectured extensively on interactive media, sound installations, online game development, and Rainforest IV. He co-authored a paper on Rainforest with Matt Rogalsky for presentation at the Getty Museum. He holds an MFA (Sculpture) from Tyler School of Art and an MFA (interdisciplinary arts) from SUNY Buffalo. His work is available on Edition Block/Gramavision "Rainforest IV", Orange Mountain Music's "Composers Inside Electronics" - from the Kitchen Archives No. 4, "20 jahre Inventionen II" - Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD, "Soundings" - Neuberger Museum (video), and he is currently preparing a CD of his Berlin works "Fishing for Sound". Work is Hennies’ latest release and first for the revamped Quakebasket label and it consists of two pieces. The first is a ten-minute solo vibraphone piece called “Settle,” which as it evolves, brings out electrifying resonances that evoke the early piano music of Charlemagne Palestine or even the lush dogma of Brian Eno and Michael Nyman. Hennies has famously explored the shapely vibrational properties of woodblocks, making them truly sing in a way that few Western percussionist-composers have, so it should be no surprise that his coaxing of metal lamellae, cylinders and sustain pedal would result in a panoply of interlocking and unfolding shapes. These shapes are patently the result of refined action – striking, damping, and measuring intervals – but reducing their behavior to stimulus and response oversimplifies the comely beauty that his instrument produces. - quakebasket ▲

USニューウェイヴ・シーンで捻ったファンク・グルーヴを志向していた2人が、VangelisやBrian Enoの影響からエレクトロニック/ニューエイジへ転向する、その起点となった82年作。メンバーはギタリストChris Spheeris（クリス・スピアリス）、ピアニストPaul Voudouris（ボール・ヴードーリス）。ゲストでマルチ奏者Vince Andrae（ヴィンス・アンドレ）が参加。ギターの反復と幾多のエフェクトが重なる光の覚醒A1、カラカラと竹の音が滴るディープ・メディテーションA2、清らかな光芒を渡り安息の地へ至るB1、3者の操るアトモスフェリックなシンセを基調とした40分のスピリチュアル・トリップ。84年には、Spheerisがピアノをフィーチャーしたソロ作を、Voudourisはシンセポップのソロ作をそれぞれリリースし、YanniやKitaroと肩を並べるメジャーなニューエイジ・コンポーザーとして映画や国際イベント（オリンピック、ミスユニバース）などの音楽で現在まで活躍。本作は長いキャリアの中でも初期の実験的な試みを示すもので、94年のCD再発時にはニューエイジ・クラシックスの一作として高く評価されたようです。

コポコポ、シュワシュワと弾けるソーダ水のような音。フィールド・レコーディングやインスタレーション製作を主軸に活動するイングランドのサウンドアーティストSebastiane Hegarty（セバスチャン・ヘガティ）が、デヴォンのレーベルVery Quiet Recordsからリリースした2013年作「消失の聴取」。イッチェン川の底やライム・レジスの崖から採取した白亜質土、フランスとアルゼンチンで発掘された恐竜（サルタサウルス/ティタノサウルス）の卵殻、アンモナイトの化石を酢酸に入れ、石灰質が溶解する際に発生するCO2の発泡、その通常聞くことのできないレベルの微細なサウンドと、重量、永続性、固体性を失ってゆく過程にフォーカス。タイトル「ˈtʃɔːk:」は石灰質（チョーク）の発音記号。

ギリシャ・ボロス出身の作曲家Costis Drygianakis（コスティス・ドリジアナキス）が、1984年からソロ活動と並行して組織した不定形コレクティブOptical Musicsの第二作。録音は1990年10月から1993年4月にかけて。即興と作曲の手法に視覚芸術のアイデアを適用し、その名の通り「音楽の視覚性」を模索するスタジオ・プロジェクトで、本作ではインプロヴィゼーションや朗読に加え、Le Chant Du Monde、Ocora、Unescoといった民族音楽コレクションの断片をサンプリング/コラージュ。使用された音源/テキストは、イヌイットの詠唱、古代ギリシアの悲劇作「オレステイア」、ラマのチャント、旧約聖書詩篇、カッワーリー、ラジャスタンの放浪芸、密教の真言、Felix Hess「Frogs 4」、Jean C. Rochéの野性録音など。作曲面だけではなく、様々なパフォーマーやレコード/音源を組み上げる編集の才力を発揮した作品であり、歴史/民族のコンテキストや時間を超越した空間を浮かび上がらせる複眼的な視野は、David Toop「Ocean Of Sound」のアンビエント・ミックスにも繋がる感覚。初期作品の中では、前年に実名義でリリースしたドローン作「Hours and Seasons」と並び、グリーク・エクスペリメンタル/アンビエントの秀作として挙げたい一枚です。Drygianakisはドキュメンタリーや劇場のための作曲、ライティングなど、現在までインディペンデントなスタンスで製作活動を継続。最新作品は2015年3月リリースの「Unseen and Hidden」。6月にはアムステルダムの音楽コミュニティBrotherhoodのポッドキャストへ民族音楽やアンビエントから選曲したゲストミックスを提供しています。

独ベルリンのフリージャズ・レーベルFMPのカタログ中、一風変わったインスタレーション音源。作者は同レーベルからAchim KnispelやPeter Brötzmannらとの即興作品を発表している打楽器奏者Willi Kellers（ウィリ・ケラーズ）。オリジナルは1985年4-5月にミュンスターで開催されたエキシビジョン「地上の天国」に際して発行されたというカタログ付属の7インチ盤で、2015年7月にFMPのデジタル部門Destination:OUTよりデジタルリイシュー。「Klanginstallationen」（独語でサウンドインスタレーションの意）は、エオリアン・ハープのドローン、ガラガラとぶつかりあうHarry Bertoia風の金属製オブジェクト、水を入れた器を擦りあわせた（？）ヒョヒョという音など、4つの自作音響彫刻から発せられた1分程度の音サンプルを収録。B面にあたる#5「Die Halle」はそれらマテリアルが重なりあい交錯する、おそらく展示用の音源、またはその状況を示した4分半で、目が眩むほどの猛夏、蝉の大群が鳴き犇めく林中のような音像を呈しています。録音はJost Gebers、マスタリングはOlaf Ruppが担当。
