ベルギー・アントワープを拠点とする電子音楽家／環境音採集家Lieven Martens Moana（リーヴェン・マーティンス・モアーナ）のソロプロジェクトDolphins Into The Future。本作は、いくつかのカセットリリースを経て2009年に発表された、自身初となるLPアルバム。アイソレーションタンクの開発やイルカとの交信研究で知られるJohn C. Lilly（ジョン・C・リリー）博士の著作に着想を得て、リリー博士が提唱した「海洋における精神変容」のヴィジョンを、環境音と電子音によって音像化したオマージュ的作品となっています。 潮騒とイルカのソナー音によるA2。船の流れ着いた先の民族音楽のようなマリンバ風電子音A3など。テープループやサンプラーで構築されたローファイでトリッピーなサウンドは、海に浮かぶ筏の上で日差しに目を眩ませながら見えてくる幻覚、あるいは船酔い時の白昼夢のよう。wagonやarborなど同時代の地下ドローンカセット群と共鳴しながらも、当時の実験音楽/サウンドアート界隈が忌避していた自然主義的スピリチュアリティを意図的にストレートに打ち出した点で、後に顕在化するニューエイジ・リバイバルの潮流を予見した1枚と言えます。鯨類はガイアの声であり、失われた叡智へと静かに導く存在。90年代の自然主義的アンビエントのシンボルでもありました。
Dolphins Into The Future is the solo project of Antwerp-based electronic musician and field recordist Lieven Martens Moana. Released in 2009 following several cassette outings, this work marks his debut full-length LP. Inspired by the writings of Dr. John C. Lilly—famed for his isolation tank experiments and dolphin communication research—the album serves as a sonic homage, translating Lilly’s visions of "oceanic mind-alteration" into a tapestry of environmental and electronic sounds. From the rhythmic surf and dolphin sonar of A2 to the marimba-like electronic tones of A3, which evoke the folk music of some imagined far-off shore, the record is a masterclass in atmosphere. Constructed with tape loops and samplers, the lo-fi, trippy soundscape feels like a sun-dazed hallucination on a raft, or a feverish daydream born of seasickness. While resonating with the underground drone scene of the time (labels like Wagon and Arbor), this album was pioneering in its direct embrace of the naturalistic spirituality that contemporary experimental music often shunned. In doing so, it effectively prophesied the New Age revival that would soon follow. Cetaceans, as the voice of Gaia and silent guides to lost wisdom, stood as the ultimate symbols of 90s naturalistic ambient—a legacy Moana captures perfectly here.
