謎の男ヤニス・ドリームレイク率いる無名ラウンジバンドが遺した幻の音源───というのは架空の設定で、実態はオーストラリアの現行シーンを牽引する面々によるプロジェクト。メンバーは、未来型ソウルバンドHiatus Kaiyoteのベーシストであるポール・ベンダー、鍵盤奏者のサイモン・マヴィン、プロデューサー/マルチ奏者のラクラン・ミッチェルの3人組。往年のイージーリスニングやエキゾチカ、ムード音楽へのオマージュを、脱力感たっぷりのチープでローファイな質感で描いた一枚。擬似ラテンの華やかさや東洋趣味の演出はほぼなく、どこか無国籍的で虚無。描き割りのヤシの木をぼんやり眺めながら狭いステンレス風呂に浸かっているような、侘しい風情がなんとも良いです。1日の疲れを癒してくれる、ちょうど良い湯加減の魅惑銭湯音楽。
The phantom recordings of an obscure lounge band led by the mysterious Yannis Dreamlake—while that is the fictional premise, the reality is a project by leading figures of the contemporary Australian scene. The trio consists of Paul Bender (bassist for the future-soul band Hiatus Kaiyote), keyboardist Simon Mavin, and producer/multi-instrumentalist Lachlan Mitchell. This album pays homage to easy listening, exotica, and mood music of yesteryear, rendered with a delightfully listless, cheap, and lo-fi texture. There is almost no pseudo-Latin glamour or orientalist flair; instead, it feels unanchored and nihilistic. It carries a wonderfully austere charm, like soaking in a cramped stainless steel tub while staring vacantly at a cardboard-cutout palm tree. It is the perfect "enchanting bathhouse music" to soothe the day's fatigue at just the right temperature.
