ニューヨークを拠点に活動する音楽家ショーン・マリンズを中心としたプロジェクトMoon Mullins（ムーン・マリンズ）の2022年作。マリンズ自身がヴィンテージ・シンセやリズムボックスなど多くのパートを担当するほか、チェロ奏者のカール・マコマス＝ライヒル、マルチ奏者のアダム・ブリズビンといったゲストが参加しています。往年のイージーリスニングやムード音楽の意匠をベッドルーム・ポップ感覚で再解釈する手法は、先述のThe Sweet Enoughsと共通するも、本作の感触はよりダブ的で密室。眩暈を誘うようなヨレヨレの脱臼感と、幻惑的な音像。陽気なメロディが心地よいトロピカルムードを演出する傍らで、ふと薄気味悪さが顔を覗かせたりもするシュールな世界観が展開されます。どこか実体のない会員制ラウンジの隅で人知れず回り続けるレコードプレーヤーのよう。現行エキゾ/ラウンジ界隈のなかでも、とりわけヴェイパーウェイヴの亡霊的な影を感じさせるイマジナリーな怪作です。アートワークも秀逸。
Moon Mullins, a project centered around New York-based musician Sean Mullins, released this album in 2022. Mullins himself handles various parts, including vintage synths and rhythm boxes, joined by guest musicians such as cellist Karl McComas-Reichl and multi-instrumentalist Adam Brisbin. While sharing the approach of reinterpreting classic easy listening and mood music aesthetics with a bedroom pop sensibility, as seen in the previously featured The Sweet Enoughs, this work feels more dub-infused and claustrophobic. It presents a dizzying, wonky, off-kilter instability and mesmerizing sonic textures. Cheerful melodies create a pleasant tropical mood, yet a surreal worldview unfolds as a faint sense of dread occasionally peeks from behind the curtain. It carries the aura of a record player spinning unnoticed in the corner of a non-existent members-only lounge. Within the contemporary exotica/lounge scene, this is an imaginary oddity that feels haunted by the ghostly shadows of vaporwave. The artwork is also superb.
